In 2022, I held back a barrel of Shake Ridge Mourvèdre from bottling to over vintage and watch how it aged.  It was such a rich, big, wild wine, it seemed some more time in barrel might loosen its structure.  In 2023, I didn’t take any Mourvèdre from Shake Ridge, and instead worked with Ann’s Grenache.

The main portion of the 2023 Grenache will be bottled this fall, but I pulled a single barrel for bottling in the spring, to blend with the barrel of 2022 Mourvèdre.  The non-vintage blend of these two Shake Ridge varieties merge charmingly – Grenache that is light in color, floral yet still tannic, with Mourvèdre that is much darker and richer, but has mellowed in structure with more time in barrel.

The Mourvèdre in 2022 spent 5 days on skins before being pressed, and was aged for 18 months in neutral oak.  The Grenache had a similar life cycle in 2023, seeing 8 days on skins before pressing.  This wine also aged in neutral oak, but for only 6 months.  The two barrique were blended together just before bottling in late March 2024.

Indigenous yeast fermentation. SO2: 30 ppm total. No other additions, unfined and unfiltered.
